PURCHASE, N.Y.- Eastern University Women's Basketball saw their
season-best four-game winning streak end with a 59-42 loss at
Manhattanville College. The host Valiants scored the last 17 points of
the first half to grab control of the game.
The Eagles (14-9, 6-6
Freedom) only dressed six players for the game and were without a pair
of starters. Despite the short numbers, Eastern jumped out to a 13-5
lead as they made five of their first shots from the floor.
Manhattanvile used pressure defense to put together a quick 11-0 run,
but Bekah Roland connected on her second three of the game at the eleven
minute mark to tie the score at 16. The two teams traded baskets and
Eastern led 20-18 with eight minutes to play.
The Valiants used
stiffing defense to hold the Eagles without a field goal attempt for the
close of the half and a 17-0 run. Without the ability to extend their
defense to force turnovers, the Eagles were unable to close the gap
through the second half and the Valiants earned the season split.
"I
am really proud of the fight the players that played today showed,"
Head Coach Nate Davis said afterward, "they battled through the end.
Manhattanville is a good team and they were able to force turnovers
today." The Eagles shot 50% for the game, but they finished with 32
fewer field goal attempts as Manhattanville made 23 steals and 22
offensive rebounds.
Katie Lincoln finished with 15 points, and
Roland finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds on 7-9 shooting. Roland, a
junior forward, is now 16 points short of the 1000 point mark for her
career.
The Eagles conclude the regular season with a pair of
home games this coming week. They host FDU-Florham on Tuesday night in a
evening dedicated to recognizing men and women in the armed forces. The
athletic department will make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project
and will admit any Veteran free of charge. The regular season will wrap
up Saturday against Delaware Valley College. To earn a playoff spot,
the Eagles would need to win both games and have one of the three second
place teams to lose twice.
