With the win, the Eagles improved to 6-2 and knocked TCNJ to an even 3-3.
Eastern shot an unbelievable 74.1 percent from the field in the second half to fuel the comeback. Overall the Eagles shot 35-for-55 (63.6 percent), including six-for-10 from 3-point range. Seems like a good formula for success. "That will win you a lot of games when you shoot like that," Eagles' Coach Nate Stewart quipped.
Mike Donatoni nailed four 3-pointers and led the Eagles with 24 points. He facilitated Eastern's offense with six assists. "You can't say enough about Donatoni," Stewart said. "Twenty-four points--he's a warrior, a competitior"
Alex Nelson scored 20 points and gathered seven rebounds, and Collin Whipple scored 12 of his 16 points after the intermission.
Senior Martin Soaries' action was limited by first-half foul trouble. Soaries was called for three fouls in a 51 second span and a fourth just 40 seconds into the second half. Freshman guard Anthony Parenti stepped into the contest and contributed nine points and seven rebounds. Soaries also finished with nine.
Eastern took off with a 7-0 run to start the game. The College of New Jersey knotted the score at 15 apiece and with 2:35 left in the half had an 11-point lead. Kyle Malloy capped off an 11-3 Eastern run with a made basket with two seconds left.
Down three at halftime, the Eagles fought back and took a one-point lead with 13:42 left off a layup by Mitch Singer. After the lead traded hands briefly, the Eagles exploded on a 15-2 run in a three minute burst to seize control of the contest. The Eagles built their edge to as much as 16 late in the game before holding on for the eight point win. Even with such a good shooting from the field, the Eagles shot just 18-for-27 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line.
