ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Men's Soccer faltered at home in the Freedom Conference Championship Saturday afternoon, losing 0-1 to the Misericordia University Cougars.
After an impressive 3-0 win over DeSales Wednesday, the Eagles could not find the goal against Misericordia for the second time this season. The Eagles had battled to a 0-0 draw against Misericordia during the regular season.
The Cougars scored the game winner Saturday in the 37th minute after a restart. With Misericordia's Greg Korhonen taking the kick, the rest of the Cougars lined up outside the left post, except for Bryan Kulbacki. Kulbacki set up isolated near the right post. Kulbacki received the ball and headed it towards the goal. Cougars' freshman Chris Panagacos broke in front of Eagles' goalie Jon Crowder and finished the ball.
Kulbaki received Freedom Conference Championship Honors.
With the 1-0 lead, the Cougars locked down their defense and booted out nearly every ball that Eastern tried to get into the box. While Eastern took 10 shots in the second half, only one of those was on goal. Eastern outshot Misericordia 16-7 and earned six corner kicks to Misericordia's one. The Eagles came close to tying the game with a shot by Brandon Beaumont in the 74th minute that was saved by Misericordia's Dan Fritz.
Eastern Men's Soccer season comes to an end and with it, the careers of seniors Jon Crowder, Braden Gross, Grant Supplee, Alex Schweitzer and Josh Martin. The Eagles finish the season with a 12-6-1 record.
