ASTON, Pa.--Eastern University Men's Basketball defeated Ursinus College 76-68 Saturday afternoon to improve to 4-1 this season.
The Eagles never trailed and led by as many as 15 points in the win at the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic held at Neumann University.
Senior Alex Nelson led the Eagles with 24 points and nine rebounds, just missing his third double-double of the season. In five games this season, Nelson averages a team-high 18.2 points and 10 rebounds a game.
Collin Whipple scored 15 points for the Eagles, Michael Donatoni scored 14 points and Martin Soaries added 12.
After shooting 31 3-pointers in Tuesday's loss to Hood, the Eagles shot a more conservative 19 times from beyond the arc. Eastern shot five-for-10 from 3-point range in the first half and one-for-nine in the second half. The Ursinus College Bears shot seven-for-16 from 3-point land.
The Bears, like the Eagles, had four scorers in double-figures, and were led by 18 points from Jon Ward.
Ursinus out-rebounded Eastern 43 to 33, but Eastern took advantage of its nine offensive rebounds, scoring 11 second chance points. The Eagles also scored 20 points directly off of the Bears' 21 turnovers. In comparison, Eastern only coughed up the ball 12 times.
The Eagles soared to a 14-3 lead to start the game, but Ursinus charged back to a 27-27 tie. Eastern entered the half with a slim two-point lead. The Eagles took their biggest lead with 5:25 left in the second half when Collin Whipple drained a 3-pointer to make the score 64-49.
The Eagles hit the road Wednesday for a conference game against the Manhattanville College Valiants.
