ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Men's Basketball continued its early season success by beating Lehman College in the Nate Ware Invitational.
The Eagles topped the Lightning 70-61 Saturday afternoon and improved to 3-0 this season.
Coach Stewart liked what he saw from his team, especially how different players were making significant contributions. "Anytime you can start the season 3-0 it's a good confidence booster," he said. "I think we got contributions across the board. The whole weekend was a team effort."
Martin Soaries scored 17 points to lead the Eagles. Collin Whipple and Alex Nelson each added 15. Nelson, for the second straight game, earned a double-double in points and rebounds. Nelson finished with 12 boards.
"[Nelson's] been huge," Stewart said. "He's our middle enforcer. It makes it a lot easier for us to get out in transition when he's rebounding the ball like [that]."
Stewart added that Nelson came to the bench late in the game asking for the ball in the post because he knew he could score. "I listened to him," Stewart said, "and he made a huge basket down the stretch."
Turnovers plagued Lehman College. The Lightning committed 17 turnovers leading directly to 14 Eastern points.
Phil Ductan and Kelvin Gil scored double-digits for the Lightning, with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Matthias Raggiotto snagged 15 rebounds but was held to just four points.
Eastern plays Hood College on Tuesday and Ursinus College on Saturday.
