PURCHASE, N.Y.- Eastern University Women's Soccer scored a
pair of goals in the opening seven minutes of play and never looked back
on the way to a 7-0 win at Manhattanville College Saturday. Kelsey
Doutrich scored three times in limited minutes and Charlotte Laurie and
Amy Thomas each scored twice.
The Eagles entered the contest with
adequate motivation after last year's heartbreaking semi-final upset by
the Valiants in St. Davids. Though Manhattanville had scuffled through
the early part of the year, Eastern was committed to securing a result
from the start.
Doutrich opened the scoring 81 seconds into the
match with a dribbling run up the left side. The junior midfielder cut
central with the ball and slotted home an eight yard shot for her 10th
goal of the season. The tally kept alive a scoring streak that has now
reached nine games. She has scored in 10 of 11 games since returning
from an early season ankle injury that kept her out of three games.
Doutrich
set up the second goal of the game with a similar attack up the left
side. Her pass to the front of the net left Laurie with a big target for
her ninth of the year. Tess Beckwith set up the third goal of the match
in the 15th minute with another decisive run up the left side. Beckwith
slotted the ball into the scoring zone for a clean finish from
Doutrich.
Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw was particularly pleased with the teamwork on the second and third goals.
"We
work a lot on getting balls into those deep positions with our flank
play," he said. "Both passes were right on target, and the finishes were
very clean."
Thomas hit a shot from distance to close out the scoring in the first half. The Eagles had an 18-3 edge in shots at the break.
Doutrich
completed the hat trick on a corner kick goal in the 55th minute.
Beckwith collected a rebound of an Alli Inch blast and directed it in
front of Doutrich who touched her shot to the lower right corner.
Laurie
scored her second of the day on a ball over the top from Katelyn
Rittenhouse in the 62nd minute. Thomas converted another well-played
corner with a powerful header from in close. Carly Inch picked up the
assist on the play.
Alysia Goodman was credited with three saves as she earned her seventh shutout of the season.
The
Eastern playoff picture becomes fairly clear going into the final
regular season games. Barring an upset win by Delaware Valley College at
Misericordia next Saturday, the Eagles will likely be playing their
first round opponent on the road for a chance to earn a home game. The
Eagles hold a one point lead over the Wilkes Colonels and will secure a
home game with a win or a tie.
"We are starting to get some people
healthy," Mouw commented, "and this final week should get us going at
the right speed for the post-season."
Before playing that important regular season finale, the Eagles travel to Salisbury University for a non-league game on Tuesday.
