PURCHASE, N.Y.- In a game littered with restarts, the host
Manhattanville Valiants proved to be more efficient and emerged with a
2-1 win in double overtime over Eastern University Men's Soccer. The
loss, coupled with an upset win by King's College, puts the Eagles into a must-win scenario this coming Saturday at Wilkes.
The
Eagles fell behind in the 36th minute after a pair of great scoring
chances of their own. Jair Saenz blistered a dipping free kick over the
wall that Manhattnaville goalkeeper Jason Torres tipped over the bar.
Saenz then curled a corner kick into the scoring area that the Valiant
defense cleared away.
Manhattanville's Keston George escaped the
zone with great speed and pushed the ball wide to Marco Blasetti on the
right wing. Blasetti outraced the recovering Eastern defense and whipped
a ball across the face of the goal toward George at the back post. The
sizzling cross never made it to George, the 2009 Freedom Conference
Player of the year, as it deflected into the goal off an Eastern
defender.
The game had fifty fouls called and 14 corner kicks.
The
Eagles drew level on a Saenz free kick in the 78th minute. The first
year center back's ball from 35 yards out appeared to be a serve that
went untouched into the left side of the net.
The Eagles had all
the chances in the first overtime, but the Valiant defense held its
ground through the opening ten minutes of extra time.
With less
that 3 1/2 minutes to play, Manhattanville earned and converted a corner
kick. Yani Quinteros caught a driven ball at the near post and headed
it home for his fourth goal of the year.
The Eagles are now in what is essentially a must-win scenario at Wilkes on Saturday. On a positive note, results through the year have put the Eastern team in a situation where they will advance to the post-season ahead of Misericordia if the two teams finish tied and King's wins out.
The Eagles play at Penn State-Abington in a non-league contest Wednesday.
