ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Perhaps Fall Break has something to do
with it. The No. 5 Eastern University volleyball team scuffled to a
three set win over a scrappy Haverford team. In doing so, the Eagles
(24-1) stretched their winning streak to 17 games. Courtney Reinhold
finished the day with a match-high 14 kills and a pair of service aces.
The
Eagles trailed early in each set, and relied on a couple solid service
runs in each set to rally for the wins. In the opening set, Reinhold
served four straight points to break an 18-18 tie to give the home side
some separation late. Reinhold's service run came earlier in the second
set, as the senior All-American served a pair of aces in a five point
run give the Eagles a 17-11 edge. Kearby Benak served six straight
points in the final set for a 20-13 edge.
The Fords (10-12) put
the Eagles under pressure from the start with a solid block and some
quick attacks. The Eagles, who have been out of school for a couple
days, responded with an uncharacteristically large number of hitting
errors. The miscues dropped Eastern's hitting percentage down to .189
for the match. That number is their third lowest hitting percentage of
the year.
Eastern Head Coach Mark Birtwistle felt there were positives even with the offensive struggles.
"Haverford did a lot of good things coming out," he said," It
kind of woke us up. We are going to need that for tomorrow with
Randolph-Macon coming in. I was pleased that we didn't lose our focus.
Mentally we are doing a good job even though it was not our best
offensive night. We had a couple big digs and key blocks that were key
moments for us."
Katrina Pisch gave the Eagles a lift with an out of system kill to end the second set, and the Eagles ended the night with their most
efficient hitting set. Reinhold put away six balls and Rachel Wenger
hit .500 with four kills as the home team hit .257 in the decisive third set. Maria Horning finished the match with 37
assists.
The Eagles host Randoph-Macon College and York College
in a tri-match tomorrow. Eastern plays Randolph-Macon, a 2010 'Sweet 16'
team at 10 and York at 2 pm. The two teams will play each other at
noon.
