RADNOR, Pa.- Eastern University Women's Basketball entered this
evening's contest at neighboring Cabrini College having dropped six
straight road contests. Behind balanced scoring and solid team defense,
the Eagles snapped that slide with a 64-45 win.
Katie Lincoln
arrived at Cabrini just before game time because she was in a Chemistry
lab until 5:50. Whatever science she was doing certainly worked as the
first year guard came off the bench for a career high 16 point and seven
rebound effort. She was 2-3 from distance before intermission and the
Eagles made 13-23 first half shots to build a 30-21 lead. Though Lincoln
hit a pair of outside shots, the Eagles used the inside presence of
Bekah Roland, Sam Weaver, and Jess Ogden to build the early edge. Roland
led the Eagles with eight points at intermission.
The Cavaliers
were intent on stopping Shante Jones, the junior guard, who entered this
today's game averaging over 22 points per game, saw double teams coming
and played the role of provider. She had six of her game-high nine
assists before intermission.
"Tonight really showed that more
players need to step up and take opportunities when they present
themselves." Head Coach Nate Davis observed after the contest, "That
will be the key to the rest of our season. I thought tonight was a great
team effort; it was definitely our most well-rounded game all year."
Jones
hit a three pointer to start the second half and the Eagles counted by
threes for a bit as Lincoln and Weaver converted three-point plays
inside and Lincoln buried a long shot to give the visiting side a 42-26
edge. The Eagles continued to defend well and grabbed a 46-26 lead on a
transition basket from Jones.
Though the Cavaliers closed the gap
to 50-40 with five minutes to play, the Eagles held their composure and
closed out the game with solid ball-handling and free throw shooting.
"I
was a lot more relaxed tonight than usual." Lincoln commented, "I
don't know what it was. The passes had more kick and made it into hands
faster, so I felt like I had more time to set up my shot or to make
decisions about what I wanted to do with the ball." With the extra time
and confidence she finished 5-8 from the floor and a perfect 3-3 from
the foul line. The seven rebounds also ties a career high. The coaches
joked afterward that perhaps Lincoln would not be allowed to participate
in warm-ups for the rest of the year.
Jones also finished with
16 points and Roland scored a very efficient 14. Jones was an assist and
a pair of rebounds short of her second triple-double of the year.
Brittany Sandone led the hosts with 25 points.
The Eagles (11-8)
will look to carry the momentum of tonight's road win as they travel to
King's on Wednesday. The Monarchs topped the Eagles in overtime in St.
Davids to start the year.
