POMONA, N.J.-- Eastern University Basketball snapped a four-game losing streak with an impressive 64-53 win at Richard Stockton College. Behind 12 points from Dan Miller and 10 from Martin Soaries, the Eagles outscored the host Ospreys 33 -18 in the second half to earn their first win of the second semester.
Playing close to his hometown, Alex Nelson scored eight of the first ten Eastern points, but the Ospreys countered with sharp shooting from the perimeter. Stockton made 6-8 three pointers in the opening 20 minutes and held a 35-31 lead at the intermission. While Nelson led all scorers at half with 12, it was the Eastern bench that kept things together for much of the half. Dan Miller scored six and Chaz Merriman-Brown had five points and four rebounds while adding a strong defensive effort against Stockton top-scorer Kai Massaquoi.
The Eagles burst out of the gate after the intermission with six straight points on a pair of inside baskets from Nelson and a lay-in from Soaries. The Ospreys took a timeout and were eventually able to tie the game at 41-41, but the momentum and pace of the game had shifted in favor of Eagles. Miller scored the next six Eastern points to give the Eagles a short-lived four point edge.
Stockton sharp-shooter Pat Kelly responded with two straight contested shots to give the Ospreys their final lead of the afternoon at 48-47 with 6:03 to play in the contest. The Eagles responded with a pair of free throws from Mike Donatoni, a lay-up from Martin Soaries, and two Don Kaiser free throws. The Eagles finished the afternoon 19-21 from the foul line. Kelly cut the Eastern lead to two with another long three pointer, but Miller scored on two straight possessions to answer.
Down the stretch, Eastern was able to take care of the basketball and hit free throws to push the final margin to eleven.
"We challenged the guys at halftime," Head Coach Matt Nadelhoffer said, "and they responded with a great defensive effort. We needed to respond like this." After surrendering six three-pointer in the first half, the Eastern defense held the Ospreys to just a pair of long contested threes in the second half.
Led by Miller's 18 the Eastern bench outscored their Stockton counterparts 29-8 for the game. The coaching staff pointed to the work of Don Kaiser (6 points, 7 rebounds) and Merriman-Brown in helping to hold Stockton to 33% shooting in the second half.
Nelson finished with 16 points and Soaries scored ten. Kelly led the hosts with 14 points with four three-pointers.
The Eagles return to Freedom Conference action Wednesday night at FDU-Florham.
