Women's Soccer Takes Kickoff Classic

Eastern University Women's Soccer struck for a pair of goals early and used solid defensive play throughout the field to hold on for a 2-0 win over the hosts in the Championship game of the Havarford Kickoff Classic. Tess Beckwith and Kelsey Doutrich scored goals in the win.

Beckwith gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. She pounced on a rebound of a Doutrich shot and buried it in the top of the net. The goal came after a well taken corner kick from Ashley Graybill reached Doutrich just ten yards from goal. The Haverford goalkeeper got two hands to Doutrich's shot, but Beckwith beat her mark to the loose ball for her second tally of the 2010 campaign.

Doutrich doubled the advantage 15 minutes later on a turn in the box. Fellow sophomore Amy Thomas created the chance with a positive run and a good entry pass from the left side. Doutrich beat her mark with the first touch and buried a left footed drive with the second. The goal was the fourth of the week for the sophomore forward.

The Eagles continued to press the attack until the waning moments of the first half when the hosts gathered momentum. Despite an increase in possession, the Fords were unable to get beyond the Eastern back line for legitimate chances. Aly Goodman made just one first half save on a long shot.

"At the half we committed to keeping the shutout," Coach Mouw said, "while it would have been nice to have created a three goal cushion, we committed to keeping our people home and biding our time for chances."

With that strategic decision, the Eagles were able to hold their own in possession, but also limited the hosts' chances. Haverford's best chance came on a low sharp cross on an indirect kick in the box that Goodman cut away with a dive.

"I was very pleased with our defensive organization throughout," Mouw said, "our midfield core was very effective in eliminating scoring chances, and our back line was solid throughout."

The win gives the Eagles their first regular season Tournament Championship in nine years and gives the squad their first 3-0 start in the same time-frame.

Eastern returns to action at the TCNJ Adidas Classic next Saturday. They will take on former PAC rival Centenary in the opening round and the 3rd ranked hosts on Sunday.
