Eastern University Women's Soccer scored five times in the final 48 minutes of the match to pull away to a 5-0 win at Moravian College.
Kelsey Doutrich scored a goal and added an assist in the win.
Though the Eagles (6-2-1) controlled much of the game, the scoring did not come right away. Throughout the first half, the team had chances that either went just wide or that were turned away by last-ditch efforts from the Moravian defense or goalkeeper. Doutrich hit the post in the 27th minute, and Tess Beckwith beat the Moravian defense to the ball, but an awkward skip of the ball on the muddy surface forced Beckwith to play a ball backwards to an onrushing Alli Inch. Inch's shot caromed off the leg of a defender and the score remained at 0-0.
Eastern finally found the scoring touch in the 42nd minute of the match when Michelle Brown blasted an Alli Inch pass into the upper part of the goal for her second strike of the year. The Eagles had a 12-5 advantage in first-half shots, but the result remained in the balance at the intermission.Â
"Moravian's men's team had played a game in the rain on the field yesterday," Head Coach Dan Mouw, "and we struggled to adjust to the surface. Through the first half we kept playing into the funnel and they were able to take advantage of the uncertainty that the surface provided."
After the break, the visiting Eagles opened up the game. Beckwith finished a through ball from Doutrich five mintues into the period. The junior forward showed great composure on the finish after a touch around the goalkeeper. Three minutes later, Kristine Zeiset ripped a shot from the edge of the box into the upper corner for a 3-0 lead.Â
Doutrich closed out the match with a pair of goals. The first came at 64:17 after Beckwith pulled the goalkeeper out and pushed the ball into space. Doutrich's second tally came on a nifty dribbling into the box and around the goalkeeper.
"We were short-handed today, " Mouw said, "but I was really pleased with the contributions we got from players who needed to play a bigger role in today's match. I felt our focus was good and the team was committed to getting back on track."
Eastern finished the match with a 26-10 advantage in shots. Sarah Herman stopped three shots to record her first collegiate win in goal.
The Eagles return to action on Saturday for a critical Freedom Conference showdown at Misericordia University on Saturday.
