Field Hockey Stops Montclair in Opener

The 18th ranked Eastern University field hockey team opened their 2010 campaign with a convincing 4-1 win at Montclair State University. The Eastern attack broke a 1-1 halftime tie with three second half tallies. Hope Donnelly scored a pair of goals to pace the Eagles.

Eastern jumped on the board in the seventh minute as Donnelly cleaned up a rebound on the team's first penalty corner of the year. Brittany Moyer fired the initial shot to put pressure on the defense. Eastern held a 10-6 advantage in corners for the game, but Montclair took advantage of one of those chances for an equalizer with 15 minutes to play in the half.

After the break, it was all Eagles. First year forward Abby Wagner broke the deadlock with a nifty reverse stick goal just over six minutes into the second frame. Moments later, Donnelly scored her second on a flick to the top of the cage on another penalty corner. Kim Campbell finished the scoring when she stuffed home a Yvonne Herbster cross with 3:29 to play.

"Today was a very big step forward," commented Eastern Head Coach Camrin Azzarano, "we connected very well throughout the field, and I was very impressed with the way our young players fit. We scored beautiful goals. It is still a day by day process, but I am very pleased with this day."

Azzarano pointed out the play of junior defender Danielle Danser, and she also expressed delight with her team's ability to execute on corners and restarts. The final goal of the contest came on a timely restart from Herbster.

The Eagles open their home slate on Friday afternoon against Franklin and Marshall College.
