Eastern University Baseball used five
home runs and a pair of strong pitching outings to sweep a doubleheader
at Lancaster Bible College. Sophomore shortstop Scott Renauro
stretched his hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the 10-1
opening game win and a solo home run to lead off the third inning in
the 7-0 game-two victory.
The Eagles (15-10, 6-6) struggled out of the gate in the opener. In the first inning, Renauro
got hit by a pitch and stole a couple bases before scoring on a Dan
Garcia single. The host Chargers tied the score in the bottom of the
inning and the Eagles managed just a single run on a third inning home
run from Matt Horican until the sixth inning.
That single run would have proved to be enough as McNulty did not allow another run in his five innings of work. The junior right-hander allowed six hits and one run to pick up the win.
The
Eastern offense finally picked up in the sixth inning. Joel Rios led
off with a single, and he scored on Dan Garcia's third home run of the
year. André Butler drove
in a third run in the inning with a walk. Rios sparked a second rally
of the game with a lead-off double in the seventh. The Eagles plated
five runs in their final at bat. Renauro drove in a pair with a two-out single.
The Eagles cracked three more home runs in the second game. Ernie Stiegler drove in the first run of the game with a second-inning single. Renauro and McNulty homered in the third to put separation in the game.
Lukasik
used an overpowering fastball and a good change up to keep the Chargers
off balance. He allowed just four hits and struck out eight in six
innings of work.Eastern pitching coach Dave Lorber was really pleased with Lukasik's
command on the mound. He said, "Greg's fastball was the best I've seen
it. He was overpowering today, and he had a good change up as an out
pitch as well. It is good to see him pitch with confidence."
Lorber
also commented on the importance of Rios' recent offensive surge. The
sophomore third baseman hit a three run home run to cap the scoring for
the day. He has quietly hit .538 (14-26) with nine RBIs and ten runs
scored in the last seven games.
With
the win, the Eagles reached the 15 win plateau for the first time since
2001. In that year, the Eagles won a program-best 18 games. Even with
the remarkable turnaround from last year's 3-29 campaign, Coach Midkiff
and the rest of his staff have bigger goals for their second campaign.
"We really feel good about the group we have," he stated, "but we also
know that we need to continue to work on consistency to become a
playoff team."
The Eagles sit
in a tie for the final playoff spot in the Freedom Conference with nine
games to play. They resume league play this weekend with a three game
set against FDU- Florham. The two teams will play a single game in St. Davids on Friday before traveling to FDU for two on Saturday.
