Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Tops Guilford

Eastern University Men's Lacrosse downed Guilford College 13-5 in their third straight road test to start the young season. Cal Napolitano scored three times and Michael Hofmeister added two goals and two assists to lead the Eastern attack.

Prior to the contest, Coach Childs challenged his team to continue to get better between the lines, and the Eagles responded with dominating face-offs and an effective ride through the day. AJ Ryan led the way with thirteen face-off wins and a game-high seven ground balls. Fellow freshman Ryan Cassidy also collected seven ground balls. Eastern won 14 of the 19 face-offs on the day and held the Quakers 19-31 on clears.

Eastern's control of the midfield gave them chances at goal, and the young Eagles converted early. Napolitano scored his first goal of the day with 11:20 to play in the first quarter, and Will Johnson finished a Hofmeister pass a minute later. David Darling gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead on a pass from Matt Soldano six and a half minutes into the game.  Johnson and Napolitano closed the period with goals.

Napolitano's goal came as time expired on a feed from Hofmeister after Michael Gibeault won possession for the Eagles in the defensive half. Eastern forced their hosts into seven turnovers in the opening period and held a 14-2 advantage in shots.

The Quakers scored the first two goals of the second to close the gap before Soldano and Hofmeister each scored goals in the final two minutes to restore the five goal advantage. Aaron Benz made six of his ten saves in the second period. Though the Eagles continued to force turnovers, they also gave the ball up in the second period, and Guilford was able to generate 10 shots in the period.

The two goals late in the first half restored momentum for the Eagles. Eastern started the second half with possession because of a Guilford penalty, and they capitalized early. Zac Ivy buried a Soldano pass in the first 20 seconds of the period. Sophomore attack Matt Wagner pushed the Eastern lead to 9-2 on a transition goal after Joey Wilmot forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball.

Ivy's second goal of the period came just seconds later as AJ Ryan won yet another face-off. Napolitano answered a Guilford goal with his third of the day with five minutes to play in the third. The Eagles led 11-3 going into the final period. Hofmeister and Wagner added tallies for the final score.

Benz finished his afternoon midway through the fourth and gave way to Brandon Schmidt and Dave Hoger for the final minutes in goal. Coach Childs said of the day, "We knew going in that we were going to have to win the middle of the field, and we did that. We need to shoot better, but I'm pleased with our progress. I think we had a really good Spring Break trip."

The young Eastern squad returns to St. Davids where they will prepare for their home opener against Ursinus College on Saturday.
