Softball Nabs Two Wins As Offense Explodes

On Friday, the aggressive hitting finally paid off as the Eagles picked up two key victories.

In their first game of the day, the Eagles came out swinging and plated five runs in the top of the second inning against Division II opponent, Mercy College. The Mavericks chipped away at Eastern's lead tacking on three of their own in the bottom of the second. The Eagles responded quickly in the top of the third off of an RBI single by junior Valerie Heffline.

Eastern was able to quiet the bats of Mercy for an inning behind the arm of Kristine Rosko, but the Mavericks would not give in. Mercy plated three more of their own in the bottom of the fourth, knotting the score at 6-6 going into the top of the fifth. It was at that point the Eagles offense exploded, scoring ten runs in the frame. Molly Oberholzer lead the charge in the inning scoring twice and picking up a double and single in the inning. Freshman Janelle Fair delivered the biggest blow however by ripping a bases clearing triple.

Fair took to the mound in the bottom of the fifth to shut the door on the Mavericks. Rosko would pick up the win in relief for sophomore Maggie McGowan who left the game due to injury.

Unfortunately, the second game against the Mavericks was not as explosive as the Eagles dropped a heart breaker 1-0. Fair took the hard luck loss, while sophomore Theresa Esposito paced the offense with two hits.

The Eagles took a short rest and returned to the diamond for their third game of the day against Northwestern College (Minn.). After trading runs in the first inning, Eastern's offensive attack returned to form in the bottom of the fifth in game three. Michele Morongell, Jaclyn Gangemi, and Samantha Terenzoni each ripped RBI singles giving Eastern a 4-1 lead.

Northwestern refused to give in, chipping away at the Eastern lead in the top of the sixth. They would eventually tie the game up at 4 runs a piece in the top of the seventh.

Going into the bottom of the seventh, Eastern prepared to grind out a run. However, junior Amy Bellows decided that all the Eagles needed was one swing of her bat. With a 2-2 count, Bellows took the Ashley Olson offering and deposited it behind the left center fence for a walk off solo homerun.

Fair picked up the win for the Eagles going the full seven innings while striking out 9. Offensively, McGowan collected three hits, while Gangemi and Carly Rawlings picked up two hits a piece.

Eastern finishes up their spring trip on Saturday with two games. The first game is slated for 9:00 AM against Case Western Reserve while the second is slated for a 5:00 PM start against Carlow University.
