Eastern University Women's Lacrosse dropped a difficult 13-12 decision
in a physical game at Widener on Wednesday night. The host Pride scored the last four
goals of the contest to rally for the win. Grace Griffith scored five
goals to lead Eastern.
Widener grabbed a 1-0 lead early on Jackie Elliot's first goal of
the evening. The Eagles then rallied with goals from Courtney Reinhold
and Jess Field. The Eagles would not trail again until the 56th minute
of the contest.
Elliot, who scored a game-high six goals, tied the game at two before Griffith again pushed the Eagles in front. Widener tied the score again, but Griffith tucked away a pass from Allie Fultz
to give Eastern a 4-3 lead midway through the first half. The Eagles
then started to find an offensive rhythm as Field scored on a drive in
transition and Kelly Dando
buried a pass from Field on another transition play. Reinhold then
pushed the Eastern lead to 7-3 on a well-placed free position shot.
The two teams traded goals over the final four and a half minutes into the break, and the half ended with Eastern leading 9-6. The final two Eastern goals of the half came on great team combinations. Griffith scored from Krystal Cairns with 2:09 left, and Dando came off a screen at the eight and ripped a Griffith pass into the upper part of the goal with 1:21 to play. The Pride, however, was able to answer both goals with unassisted tallies.
Reinhold
scored her third of the evening just over five minutes into the second
half, but the last four goal lead of the night only lasted 26 seconds
as Widener answered on the ensuing draw. Griffith was able to score a
pair of unassisted goals in the second half, but the Eastern offense
was unable to hold the ball for extended periods of time, and the Pride
carved into the deficit.
Widener tied the game with 6:18 to
play, and they took the lead with 3:20 to play. Both goals came after
periods of possession where the Eastern defense was able to tip balls
free but was unable to scoop ground balls.
The Pride quickly won the ball after took the lead, and the Eagles wereonly able to establish possession at the one minute mark. The Eagles had two free position shots in the final fifty seconds. Dando's shot with 45 seconds to play hit the post, and Griffith had her shot turned away by Widener goalie Linda Salcedo.
The Eagles (2-4, 2-1 MAC) will return to action with an important MAC contest on Saturday against Lycoming. That game will begin at 1:30.
