After a difficult Freedom Conference opener on Saturday, the Eagles returned to action at home on Wednesday in a non-conference double header against Haverford College. The main line battle ended in a draw with both teams picking up a win.
In the first game the Fords took control early, scoring six runs in the top of the second. Eastern answered briefly with a run in the bottom of the second. Maggie McGowan reached first on an error by the Ford's short stop, Candice Smith. The sophomore from Phoenixville, Pa. stole second and made it to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Two pitches later, McGowan came into score on a passed ball.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, that was all the offense they could muster. The Fords put the Eagles away in the top of the fifth with four runs. Game one would end in a run-rule shortened game 10-1.
The second game was much different for the Eagles as they drew first blood in the bottom of the second inning. McGowan sparked the offense once again with a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by Molly Oberholzer. Back to back singles by Steph Weaver and Valerie Heffline loaded the bases and set the table for an RBI single by Theresa Esposito. Eastern would tack on an additional run in the inning off of a sacrifice fly by Carly Rawlings.
Eastern manufactured another run in the fourth. Rawlings once again delivered a key RBI by knocking in Heffline for her second sacrifice fly of the ball game. Haverford picked up a run in the top of the fifth, but the Eagles kept them at bay with another run in the bottom of the inning.
Freshman Janelle Fair was masterful in game two taking a perfect game into the fifth inning. The Manheim Central graduate allowed one run on three hits with two strike outs to pick up her fourth win of 2010.
"It was nice to come out of this double header with a split," said Eagles' head coach Brittany Stroop. "We were able to learn two very important lessons today. First we learned in the first game that you cannot give a good team extra opportunities or they will take advantage of them. Second, we learned about what it takes to bounce back immediately from a tough loss."
"We have a lot to look forward to this year," added Stroop. "We have a very talented team. It all comes down to getting everything to click at the right time."
The Eagles will remain at home this weekend as they host King's College in a Freedom Conference double header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM.Â
