Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Takes Third Straight Title

Top-seeded Eastern University Field Hockey scored a pair of first half goals and added another in the second to beat second seeded King's College and secure a third straight Freedom Conference Championship. Senior midfielder Sarah Garber, who helped the Eagles to shutout wins in both games, was named tournament MVP. The #8 Eagles (19-2) now await their NCAA Tournament destination.

Eastern carried the action early, but the visiting Monarchs fended off a series of four consecutive corners to keep the Eagles off the board until the 11th minute. Brittany Moyer buried her 11th of the year after Yvonne Herbster smashed a ball across the face of the goal. The ball popped up off a defender's stick, but Moyer remained composed and batted the thigh high ball into the netting.

"It was just there," Moyer said afterwards, "I'm not sure how it got in the air, but I was moving into position and I kwew it was me when it was there." Moyer, who won a title with her sister Lindsay in 2009, is credited with her third game-winner of the year.

While the one goal would ultimately turn out to be enough, the Eagles picked up an important insurance goal when Lisa Gocht pushed a Brittany Moyer deflection just over the goal-line in the 28th minute. The shot never made it to the backboard, but the official was on the spot to see green between the ball and the end-line.

Laura Ressler made four of her six saves in the opening frame. The senior backstop pushed a penalty stroke around the left upright to keep the lead at 2-0 into the intermission.

The host Eagles picked up a 45th minute goal from Yvonne Herbster, but the Eastern defense and midfield looked very sure throughout the final 35 minutes of action. Herbster collected the insert on a penalty corner and pushed through a tackle before ripping a low shot from 12 yards out.

"Garber was awesome the whole tournament," Head Coach Camrin Azzarano stated after the match, "our whole midfield played very well, but she was exceptional in her game-awareness and composure. She seemed to have everything in control for the game."

With the victory, the Eagles earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. They will learn the location of their first game on Monday morning at 9:00 am.
