ROSEMONT, Pa.-- Eastern University Women's Basketball used stellar free throw shooting and timely defense to hold off a second half rally from the host Rosemont College Ravens on the way to a 71-60 win. Shante Jones led the way for the Eagles with 23 points and 11 rebounds. The junior forward was 7-7 from the line to lead the Eagles to an 86% shooting night from the stripe.
The Eagles (3-1) grabbed a 12-11 lead on an Aly Goodman steal and lay up midway through the first half, and they would not trail again. despite some subpar shooting and too many turnovers for the the coaches' liking, the Eagles held a 32-24 lead at the intermission. Jones led the way with nine points before the intermission and Jess Ogden scored seven of her nine points in the opening frame.Â
Twice, in the early moments of the second half, the Eagles built the lead to the mid-teens and looked as though they were going to run away with the game. Each time, however, the host Ravens, wre able to get the ball inside and cut back into the deficit. The hosts closed the gap to 50-46 with 11:05 to play.
Eastern then answered with a decisive 7-2 run to restore a more comfortable margin. Katie Lincoln split a pair at the line and connected on a three pointer at the top of the key, and Bekah Roland bumped the Eastern edge to nine with a three pointer in tranisition from the right corner. Roland finished with 14 points and Lincoln had 13.
Ashley Montecchio scored 22 points to pace the Ravens.
The Eagles are off until Monday Nov. 29, when they will host Arcadia in a 7:00 p.m non-league game. That contest will be the kickoff contest for
Eastern's Season of Impact.Â
