On one of the nicest days of the year, Eastern University Field Hockey jumped to a quick start and cruised to an 8-1 win over Freedom Conference foe DeSales University. The Eighth ranked Eagles improve to 3-0 in league play with the home win.
Coach Azzarano's squad came into today's homecoming game on the heels of a tough home loss on Thursday. The goal going in was to get off to a good start. By all accounts, the Eagles hit that goal as they tallied three times in the opening ten minutes of action.Â
Brittany Moyer buried an unassisted tally in the fifth minute. Fifty seconds later, Moyer set up Herbster on the doorstep for a 2-0 edge. First year forward Jess Jaindl added her first of the day in the tenth minute.
The Eagles continued to apply pressure through the match, and Kim Campbell pressed home her first of the day just before the midway point of the opening half. Christin Haas set up the play with a nice cross. Jaindl put the Eagles up 5-0 with her seventh goal of the year on an assist from Sarah Garber, and Campbell closed out the first-half scoring with a penalty stroke.
The Eagles held a 19-6 advantage in first-half shots and recorded 12 penalty corners to just five for the Bulldogs. Laura Ressler made five stops to keep the visitors off the board for the first half. Eastern's standout senior goalie would give way to sophomore Christin Suetterlein for the second half.
Moyer tallied her second of the day in the opening minutes of the second half on a pass from fellow Christopher Dock graduate Kelby Bolton.Moyer lifted her shot high over the goalie's head for her eigh th of the year.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 7-1 in the 54th minute before Ashley Beck finished the scoring for the Eagles. Eastern (12-2, 3-0 Freedom) will have week to prepare for a big showdown with 2009 Freedom Finalist King's. They will play in Wilkes Barre on Oct. 16.
