On a day when the other fall sports teams were honoring their seniors in home games, Eastern University Volleyball's senior-less roster played a pair of highly-ranked opponents at the Wid Guisler Invitational at Juniata
College. The #5 Eagles dropped their first match of the day to #4
Emory. In their second match, they stretched their #1 ranked hosts to
five sets, but fell 3-2.
Emory entered the match off a win over Juniata
on Friday night. The Emory Eagles (22-4) jumped to a quick 2-0
advantage with 25-16 and 25-15 wins in the first two sets, and they
held off a bit of an Eastern rally to win the third set 25-19. Courtney
Reinhold had 14 kills to lead Eastern in the loss.
The
second match of the day was a rematch of the September 23rd match-up
from earlier in the year. As they did in the earlier meeting, the Juniata
Eagles claimed the first set. On this day, however, Eastern was able to
earn two points on serve to break a 20-20 tie in the second set and
carved out a 25-23 win in the second set.
The
host Eagles overcame an early 11-5 deficit to claim a 25-17 win in the
second set. Eastern again bounced back with a 25-22 win in the fifth
set. Rachel Wenger had five kills in the set, and Maria Horning ended the set with a well-disguised tip.
Juniata
jumped to an early lead in the fifth set and hung on to claim the match
with a 15-10 victory. Reinhold finished with 28 kills and 19 digs in
the loss, and Maria Horning registered 49 assists and six kills.
Horning and Reinhold both earned spot on the All-Tournament team.
The Eagles (23-3, 6-0 Freedom) return to league action at
Delaware Valley College on Wednesday evening and will finish their
regular season in Texas next weekend.
