Eastern University Volleyball hosted
their second annual 'Dig for the Cure Event' for their final regular
season home game against Wilkes. The pink-clad #5 Eagles jumped to an
early lead in the first set and cruised to a three-set win. Eastern
(22-1, 6-0 Freedom) clinched the top spot in the Freedom Conference
Tournament with the win.
Courtney Reinhold led the Eagles with 13 kills on 23 attempts and a game-high nine digs, and Rachel Wenger added 11 kills on 15 swings. The Eagles hit .500 for the match as Maria Horning again moved the ball around to her hitters throughout the evening. Horning finished with 33 assist.
The
evening, however, was bigger than the match as the two teams paused
between the second and the third sets to remember those who are dealing
with and who have dealt with Breast Cancer in their lives. Both Eastern
head Coach Mark Birtwistle
and Assistant Coach Paul Douglas have immediate family members who have
faced breast cancer. A list of people in the audience and related to the
players on the team was read to draw attention to the proximity of the
disease and to show support for those who are battling breast cancer.
Funds collected from the sale of concessions and t-shirts on the evening will be donated to the Susan G. Komen foundation in hopes that someday there will be a cure.
