Valley
was awarded an NCAA Wrestling Regional for this February, the two schools
agreed to flip home games. As a result, the Eagles were in
Doylestown for their fourth Freedom Conference road test before their
second league game at home. The host Aggies (7-7, 2-3 Freedom) executed down
the stretch to pull away to a 75-69 win.
The Eagles (7-7, 3-2
Freedom) held a 33-28 lead at the break and were able to stretch their
edge to eight on a Martin Soaries three-pointer to start the second,
but the Aggies used a pair of three point plays from senior center
Darryl White on either side of an Alex Nelson basket to cut the Eastern
lead in half at 38-34. White, who finished with 15 points and 13
rebounds, scored another inside basket to close the gap further.
The
Eagles used their balanced attack to hold the lead until the eight and
a half minute mark. Derek Wright scored eight points in a row for the
Eagles, but the host Aggies had an answer for every basket and every
free throw, and they slowly took over control of the game. Alex Nelson
hit a tough left-handed jumper in traffic to close the gap to 66-64,
but Chris Mayo answered with an inside hoop to push the Delaware Valley
lead to four. A big blocked shot from White created a stop, and Eastern
was forced to foul.
Though the Eagles were briefly able to bring
the game back to a one-possession game with 31 seconds to play, the
hosts hit their free throws down the stretch.
Chris Mayo and
James Jones each scored 20 for the Aggies. The Eagles, who drop to to
3-2 in Freedom Conference play, had three players, led by Wright's 16
off the bench, score in double figures. Martin Soaries finished with 15
points and Nelson added 14. Wright led the Eagles on the boards as well
with 10.
For the game, the Eagles shot 45% from the floor and the
three point line, but the percentages fell in the second half as they
hit just 12-30 attempts. Both teams hit 74% of their free throws, but
the Aggies made four more in what proved to be the difference in the
game.
Head Coach Matt Nadelhoffer was frustrated with the close
of the game, but was able to put things in perspective saying, "We know
winning on the road is going to be a challenge. We didn't finish this
like we would want to, but we were right there and we forced them to
make plays. I still feel really good about the direction this team is going."
The
Eagles return to action for their first home game in a month on Monday
afternoon. They will take on 2008 National Finalist Richard Stockton
College in a non-league game at 4:00 pm.
