Throughout the year, Eastern University field hockey team has had no problem forcing penalty corners. The Eagles have had more than ten penalty corners in each of their contests so far in 2009. Over the last two matches, the Eagles have struggled to convert those opportunities into goals. Today, they were able to convert. The Eagles scored two key goals off of penalty corners for a 3-1 win at Neumann University.
The game presented several challenges as the Eagles played on grass for the first time this season. Neumann, an NCAA Tournament team last year and a former rival from the PAC, brought a large and vocal crowd to the match. The team scored a pair of second half goals to claim their third win in the last four outings.Â
"We are proud of how well our ladies responded today," praised Eagle's head coach Camrin Azzarano. "We were able to control the ball well and converting on two penalty corners was key for us."Â
Hope Donnelly put the Eagles up 1-0 nine and a half minutes into the match. Yvonne Herbster set up the penalty corner goal. Neumann snuck in the equalizer, 13 minutes in as the Eastern defense struggled to clear the ball. The match remained knotted at one goal a piece going into the half.
The Eagles dominated play in the second half. They took the lead on a penalty corner chance eleven minutes after the break. Herbster picked up her second assist of the day when she found Lindsay Moyer. The senior All-American converted the chance to give the Eagles the lead for good.
Kelby Bolton and Olivia Derr combined for an insurance goal with nine minutes left in the match. Bolton was able to redirect Derr's initial shot just enough to push it past the Knights keeper and into the back of the cage.
The Eastern defense continued their strong play. The Eagles earned a shutout win at Widener on Thursday, and they limited the Knights to just a single shot on goal and a  single penalty corner.Â
The Eagles, who were on the road for three games this week, return to action at home on Tuesday, September 22 against William Patterson. They open their Freedom Conference action a week from today on Saturday, September 26 with a home match against Wilkes at 12:00 PM.
