The Eastern University field hockey team did everything they could offensively on Tuesday evening, but they were unable to find an equalizer as they dropped a non-conference road contest at fourth ranked College of New Jersey 2-1.
The Eagles held a decisive 16-9 edge in shots, but the fourth-ranked TCNJ who made the most of their opportunities on the score board. The Lions jumped to a 2-0 halftime edge on goals by Caitlyn Jenkins and Gabby Cafone. Cafone's goal came just before the half. Eastern had a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in penalty corners before the break.
The Eagles halved the Lion lead six minutes into the second half. Yvonne Herbster scored an unassisted goal for her fourth tally of the 2009 season. The sophomore forward dribbled the length of the field on the left side, and after earning the endline cut the ball back and launched a quick shot by a Kim Campbell screen from a sharp angle.
Herbster and All-American Lindsay Moyer continued to pelt the Lions' cage, but TCNJ goalie Shannon Sycairz was equal to the task. Sycairz tallied 13 saves to earn the win. The Eagles had their last corner of the game as time expired, but they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity as time expired.
Though the Eagles came away with the loss, head coach Camrin Azzarano was pleased with her team's effort. "I'm very proud of the effort put forth tonight," she said. "We are starting to show our abilities as a team. It is a step forward." Azzarano cited the play of freshmen Britany Moyer and Shannon Graybill on the big stage. She continued, "Our freshmen really stepped up to the level of the game, and Lindsay and Yvonne are starting to find their game. There is a lot to be encouraged about. Their goalie played really well."
This was Eastern's second away match against a nationally ranked program in a week. The Eagles fell at top-ranked Messiah College last Wednesday night.
The Eagles continue on the road later in the week at Widener University on Thursday night. Their game against the 3-0 Pride is set for 7:00 PM.
