Eastern Men's Soccer opened their 2009 campaign with a resounding 8-0 home win over Penn State Brandywine. Six different Eagles scored goals as the home side out-shot their opposition 24-1. Freshman midfielder Ryan Rohrer started his career with a pair of goals.
The Eastern attack took a little while to get going, but Rohrer found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal on the Eagles' second shot of the match. The standout from Hempfield
High School took a cross from Terry Fry and tucked it home to start the
Eastern scoring. The Eagles would finish the opening half with another
pair of goals on 11 total shots. Drew Bixler
finished a through ball from Kyle Hurst with seventeen minutes to play
to double the Eastern lead. Hurst then finished a Josh Martin pass in
the waning moments of the half for a 3-0 edge.
Eastern scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half to further break the game open. Just seconds after a PSU-Brandywine own goal, Rohrer picked up his second of the day on a pass from Andrew Baggaley. Fry made it 6-0 with his first strike of the 2009 campaign on a pass from Bixler. Fry led the Eagles with 15 goals in 2008.
First
year midfielder Christian Clark scored an unassisted tally with just
under eleven minutes to play, and Mitch Thomas closed out the scoring
with a nice finish of a Josh Martin cross. Jon Crowder made one save to earn the clean sheet for the Eagles.
Head
Coach Mark Wagner commented, ""I thought the team played well as an
entire unit today. While we have some way to go to be firing on
cylinders, today was a good step in the right direction. We look
forward to a very good challenge this coming weekend." The Eagles, who
suffered several tough injuries through preseason, hope to have several
more players back and healthy as they travel to Lancaster to play a
pair of games at Franklin and Marshall.
