Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey Outlasts Montclair State

Eastern University's field hockey team started their season off on the right foot with a 3-2 victory over visiting Montclair State University.  MSU struck first off of a penalty stroke with 7:09 left in the first period.  Megan Pietruni found the top right off the cage for her first goal of the 2009 season.  The score would remain 1-0 going into the half.  The Eagles had plenty of opportunities in the first half; recording seven corners compared to MSU's three, and saw many of their shots go wide of the cage.

The Eagles came rallying back at the start of the first half as Christin Haas beat the MSU goalie for her first goal of the season, while Lindsay Moyer picked up the assist.  No more than 30 seconds later, MSU would answer as Deana Hagel would connect with Justin DiPaolo for her first goal of the season, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Red Hawks.  Eastern answered once again, pulling even at two goals a piece.  Lindsay Moyer picked up her second assist of the game as she found Yvonne Herbster for her first goal of the season with 27:31 left in the second period.

Eastern and Montclair State thought that they would be headed into their third straight overtime game, but the Eagles closed the door on the Red Hawks with 11:38 left in the game.  This time it was Kimberly Campbell finding the cage for the Eagles. Campbell picked up the ball, found some open space and push the ball past the MSU goalie and into the lower left hand corner. Haas, who scored to get Eastern's offense going in the second half assisted on the play.

Laura Ressler picked up the win in goal for the Eagles, recording eight saves on the afternoon.  Leslie Messick also stepped up defensively for Eastern, picking up a defensive save early in the first half.  Eastern returns to action on Thursday, September 3 at 4:00 PM when they travel to Gwynedd-Mercy College.
