Elizabethtown College Blue Jays scored seven straight goals on the way to a 17-8 win in an important MAC contest.
The Eagles found the net early as Michael Ryan set up Michael Hofmeister and Pat Dempsey in the first two and a half minutes of the game. Hofmeister scored his second of three on the day moments later to put the Eagles up 3-0.
The
Jays came out of a time out and put four straight goals on the board to
grab a 4-3 lead at the break.The Eagles bounced back with two straight goals at the start of the second to retake the lead. Nick Mandia scored his 25th of the year on a dodge from the right side, and the Eagles took advantage of an immediate man-up situation for Matt Wagner's 16th of the year.
Etown's Aaron Weber put away his second of five to tie the score at five before Hofmeister
put away his third to give the hosts their final advantage at 6-5. the
Jays scored three times before the half and four more in the opening
seven mintues of the third to put the game away.
Ben O'Donnell and Michael Ryan scored in the second half, but the Jays were able to hold possession or much of the fourth period. Etown held a commanding 49-17 edge in shots. Eastern goalie Zach Rivest finished the day with 17 saves despite sustaining a serious hand injury midway through in the first period. Eastern head Coach Brandon Childs was quick to point to Rivest's toughness after the game. "We found out after the game," said Childs,
"Zach is a tough competitor, and he did everything he could to try to
give our team a chance to win. I don't even know how he could hold his
stick, much less take the kind of shots he was taking."
Weber and Ryan McCafferty finished with five goals apiece for the visitors, and Greg Keneally added three goals and an assist.
The loss drops the Eagles to 3-4 in the league with three games remaining. Elizabethtown improves to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the MAC.
The Eagles host King's on April 15th.
