The Eagles left a pair of runners on in
each of the first two innings, and the host Bulldogs responded with a
pair of runs on sacrifice flies in the bottom of the second. Alley
worked through the DeSales order with efficiency as the sophomore southpaw gave up just five hits in six plus innings. "Josh gave us a really good outing today," Eastern Head Coach Matt Midkiff
commented, "he hit his spots, kept the ball down, and he let his
defense play well behind him." The Eastern defense did their job
throughout the day as they played a clean game in the field.
Midkiff
said of the afternoon, "All in all, this was as good as we can play on
defense, and probably as good as we can expect from our pitchers, but
we could not get the big hit to get on the board."
DeSales
scored again after putting the first two runners on against Alley in
the seventh. They executed a double steal and knocked a runner in with
a sacrifice fly, but Chris Dole held the hosts to a single tally. The
Eagles put a pair of runners on in the top of the eighth, but again
were unable to convert the runners into runs.
DeSales picked up their final run of the game in the eighth. Midkiff
and his staff took encouragement from the improvement between the two
games, but they recognize that there is another big hurdle to cross to
consistently win games. "We competed today, and that was good," Midkiff said, "but we cannot be satisfied with pitching well and playing good defense. Our guys have to have a better approach at the plate in every at bat."
The Eagles are off until Monday when they host Wilkes University in a 12:00 doubleheader.
