The twelve Eastern University senior men's lacrosse players finished their home career on Olson field with a convincing 20-5 win over Alvernia on Saturday. The win, combined with Lycoming's win at Manhattanville this afternoon, gives those seniors a chance to continue playing as the sixth seed in the MASCAC Playoffs. Game information for that game will be announced as it becomes available.
The
Eagles scored three times in the opening two and a half minutes of the
contest and held a 6-0 lead at the half. The visiting Crusaders righted
the ship a bit in a 4-4 second period, but the Eastern attack put away
five goals in each of the next two periods to cruise to the Senior Day
win.
Ben O'Donnell led the Eagles with four goals on the afternoon, while Pat Dempsey and Michael Ryan each put away three. Nick Mandia and Michael Hofmeister each recorded five point days as Mandia,
the program's leading career point man notched two goals and three
assists to bring his three-year career totals to 80 goals and 77
assists.
Nate Trunfio scored a pair of goals and first year midfielder Eric
Nelson registered a pair of man-up goals in the fourth quarter. The first came on a great one handed grab on a pass from behind the goal. The second came as he cleaned up the rebound on a Joey Wilmot shot. Wilmot, Tim Dempsey and Matt Wagner each collected single goals to represent the Eastern freshman class.
Pivotal in the Eagles' domination of the day was 19-9 face-off performance from Jimmy Caiola. The senior specialist from Delaware took every face-off in the game and finished with 16 ground balls. Zach Rivest made five saves before giving way to Dillard Brooks for the last 14 minutes of play. Brooks stopped two shots.
The Eastern staff was pleased with the opportunity to continue playing, and is looking forward to the challenge of next week.
