Prior to this afternoon's regular season home finale against Widener, the Eastern University seniors had won 49 games in the most successful four-year run in program history. The Eastern senior class has advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of their first three seasons. The Eagles overcame some early inconsistency to pull away to a 19-7 win. Erin Fries scored her 100th career goal in the win.
The Eagles controlled the first three draws of the game and converted that possession into three quick goals. Just over two and a half minutes in, Erin Reimel opened the scoring on a pass from Grace Griffith. Fries connected on a free position shot thirty seconds later, and Katie Choquette finished a Jessie Basch pass in transition for her first of three on the day.
The Eagles then hit a brief rough spell. With Sarah Hager off with a yellow card, the Widener team scored on their next three shots to tie the game with 23:32 to play. Jackie Elliot started the scoring for the visitors with her first of three. The Eastern defense then dug in for an extended possession. Though they did not win the ball, they kept the Pride without a shot for nearly three minutes before Hager took advantage of a checking opportunity and won the ball. Basch outran the Widener midfield and buried her 49th of the year in transition.Â
The Pride would rally to tie the game at 4-4 on another Elliot goal, but the Eagles again took the lead in transition. Courtney Reinhold forced a turnover and scooped the ground ball in the Eastern defensive end. She fired the ball ahead to Basch who dumped a pass to Griffith on the doorstep. The Pride again rallied to level the score at 5-5 when Mellany Broomall scored on the ensuing draw. Basch gave the Eagles a brief lead when Griffith returned the favor midway through the period.
Widener tied the score for the final time on a Calina Walz free position shot following a three second call with 11:26 to play in the half. The Eagles then turned up their defensive pressure to force the Pride to work in their clears. The extrapossession was key as Eastern scored four straight to pull away going to the break. Fries gave the Eagles the lead for good on a pass from Basch. Griffith then buried three straight unassisted strikes to put the Eagles up 10-6 at the half. The Eagles held a 19-9 edge in shots in the first thirty mminutes.
While the Eagles controlled the second half completelyon the scoreboard, it was not as easy as the score might reflect. Eastern goalie Kim Campbell played an inspired second half and turned away nine shots and was aggressive in challenging shooters andcorralling loose balls behind the solid Eastern defense. Reinhold and Courtney Brennan worked to keep Elliot, who did manage a free position goal early in the second, out of the scoring zone for the remainder of the period.Â
Basch finished the day with five goals and five assists and Griffith finished with five goals and a pair of helpers. Katie Choquette scored twice and Anne Dietrich, Kristen Brownett, and Fries buried single tallies after intermission. Fries scored her historic goal in transition following a great play from Sarah Hager and Liza O'Keefe. Hager checked a ball loose and O'Keefe scrambled after a loose ball. The junior midfielder played a controlled flick in traffic off the ground to an open Fries twenty five yardsup-field. Hager paced the Eagles with four caused turnovers, three ground balls, and three draw controls.
The Eagles will play two straight games against Lycoming College. The first, the regular season finale in Williamsport, will determine the location of the second. The winning team on Saturday will host a quarterfinal on Tuesday.Â
