Eastern University Softball dropped a pair of road games to the FDU-Florham Devils. The Devils jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opener after scratching out single runs in the first and second innings. Leftfielder Megan Zaccardi delivered the big blow with a second inning home run. The junior would finish the day with three homers. FDU stretched their lead to 3-0 with an unearned run in the fourth.
The Eagles got their only run of game one in the top of the fifth after Alissa Brubaker reached on an error and scored on a single from sophomore Kate Phelan. Zaccardi hit her second homer of the day in the sixth to give the hosts their final margin.
Eastern Coach Colleen Stuppy was frustrated with her team's performance on the day. "We have been doing things to win,' she said, "but today we did not do those things. We ran ourselves out of scoring situations and gave them too many outs. We will need to do the little things better to have success."
The Eagles fell behind 2-0 in game two as well, but used a two-out rally in the sixth to tie the game. Michelle Morongell drew a walk and Jaclyn Gangemi hit a single. The two moved into scoring position on a Jaimie Schwartz single and scored when Molly Oberholzer doubled. The Eastern rally ended with two on.
Eastern put two on in the top of the seventh, but were unable to score, and the game went to the bottom of the seventh. Zaccardi hit her third home run of the day with a runner on to end the game.Â
The Eagles return to action Monday afternoon with a non-league game against Widener University.
