The Eastern University women's lacrosse team jumped to a 4-1 lead in the opening fifteen minutes and extended that advantage throughout on their way to a 15-5 home win over Arcadia. Senior midfielder Jessie Basch led the way with four goals, three assists, ten caused turnovers, eight ground balls and three draw controls.
Basch found the net in the third minute on a nice drive off the left side. Sophomore Grace Griffith doubled the Eastern advantage less than two minutes later with a hard shot off a double screen from just over five yards out. Arcadia answered with a Stephanie Holguin tally before Erin Fries buried a free position shot for the first of her four goals on the day to stretch the Eastern lead to 3-1.
With the Eagles playing down a player due to a yellow card, Basch took matters into her own hands with a strong run out of the midfield for her fifth goal of the year. The Knights were able to get one back while still up a player on a nice quick stick effort from Melanie Mark off a pass from Jenni Groves.
The Eagles then scored three straight. Fries set up Erin Reimel for the first, and Basch set up Katie Choquette for the next two, and Eastern held a 7-2 advantage with nine minutes to play. Arcadia cut into that advantage with an unassisted goal from Shannon Bustin, but the Eagles were able to secure possession for the last shot of the half, and Fries converted from Basch with 4.5 seconds remaining to send the two squads to the locker-rooms at 8-3.
The Eagles held a 21-5 edge in shots in the opening half, and were the stronger team on the ground with an 11-6 edge in ground balls.
The second half began with the Eagles connecting for goals on three straight free position attempts. Reimel scored her second of the day just over a minute in, and Fries hit the next two to put the Eagles up 11-3. Holguin and Groves scored for the Knights to reduce the Eastern advantage, but Basch put away two more unassisted tallies to increase the Eastern lead back to eight.
Courtney Brennan scored her first of the year on a 10 yard strike, and Katie Choquette closed out the scoring with her third of the day. The Eagles grabbed control of the game with aggressive defending in the front half of the field, as Basch, Kristin Brownett, and Linnea Davis each forced multiple turnovers that led to increased possessions.
Kim Campbell finished with 9 saves in goal to earn the win. Eastern travels to Elizabethtown College for their second MAC game of the year. The Blue Jays reached the league final last year, and just made their debut in the top 25 for this season.
