Bekah Roland led the way for the Eagles with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
The Eagles trailed by 30-24 at the half, as Kaitlin Fiorino (10 points), Kaitlyn Malshefski (9 points), and Julia Lynott (8 points) shouldered almost the entire scoring load for the hosts. Fiorino,
who finished the day with 18 points, became the first player in King's
Women's basketball history to surpass 1,500 career points. Lizzie
Wilson had nine points at the break to lead the Eagles.
King's scored the first 11 points after half to extend their
lead to 41-24, before the Eagles started to cut the deficit. Wilsonfinally got the Eagles into the scoring column four minutes in on a nice kick out pass from Roland.
The
Eagles stepped up the pressure in the second half as they held the
Monarchs to 26% shooting in the second half, but the hosts were able to
hold their lead with 19 free throw attempts and 16 offensive rebounds
in the second half. The Eagles had cut the deficit to 57-48 on a Shaneen
Brown free throw with 4:42 to play in the game. They then appeared to
force a shot clock violation, but a a tipped ball and an extra couple
seconds on the clock gave the Monarchs enough time for Kayla Dick to
hit a jumper at the 4:07 mark as the 30 second clock expired. Dick then
bumped the King's lead up to 14 with a long three pointer off a
turnover.
The Eagles continued
to chip away, but the hosts held off their late charge to secure the
64-58 win. Wilson finished the day with 19 points, five steals, and
five rebounds despite being hampered by foul trouble throughout. Roland
wraps up her freshman campaign with 405 points and 175 rebounds in 23
games.Lynott finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Monarchs.
The program's growth from last year can be seen as the Eagles
made the transition to the Freedom this year and despite their finish
were within a couple possessions in many of their losses. As Wilson has
a year of eligibility remaining, Eastern could potentially return their
entire nucleus for the 2009-10 season.
