In a game that they had to have, the Delaware Valley College Aggies shot 50% from the field and committed just 11 turnovers to beat the Eastern University men's basketball team 74-68 Wednesday night. The Eagles trailed by 11 with just under six minutes to play and rallied with a 9-0 run over the next three minutes, but a pair of costly turnovers in the final two minutes allowed the visiting Aggies to keep their playoff hope alive with a six point win.
The Eagles crawled out of the gate and trailed 20-12 with eight minutes to play in the first half. Ty Coleman scored 10 points in a 19-10 run to put the Eagles up 31-30 with 20 seconds to go in the half. The Eagles had a chance to stretch their lead after a technical foul on the Aggies, but a pair of missed free throws and a turnover gave the visitors a chance to take a lead into the break. Jon Evans hit a long jumper from the corner to give Del Val a 32-31 lead at the break.
Jason Seipt scored nine points on a pair of long three pointers and an inside basket and free throw as the visitors ground their way to a 51-41 lead seven minutes into the second half. The Aggies would hold that lead until the 5:49 mark when the Eagles made their final charge.
Coleman led all scorers with a season-high 19 points. Jason Reels finished with 15 points, Derek Wright added 11 points and eight rebounds, and Tyrik Tucker finished with 10. James Jones led four Del Val players in double figures with 17. Mike Williams added 16 and Seipt 15 while Evans contributed 11 off the bench.
The loss drops the Eagles to 8-6 in the league and into a two-way tie for third with Wilkes University who downed second place Manhattanville College this evening. The Aggies move into a tie for fourth with Alvernia at 6-7. The Eagles, who could have locked up a play-off spot with a win tonight, still control their own destiny in terms of making the playoffs, but they will need to beat DeSales at home on Saturday or win at King's next Saturday to assure themselves a spot.Â
Eastern Athletics is sponsoring a food drive for Saturday. Everyone bringing a non-perishable food item for donation to City Team Ministries will be admitted to the game free.
