The Eastern University Volleyball team took on top-ranked Juniata for the second time this season. The Eastern Eagles closed the gap significantly, but in the end, the top-ranked Juniata College Eagles were able to side out with enough consistency to earn enough points on serve to advance to the Elite Eight.
Coach Birtwistle's young Eagles, who played one senior and no juniors, lost a pair of tight sets to open the match. They then earned a hard-fought 28-26 win in the third set, but the first seeded hosts erased an early deficit in the fourth set to emerge with a 25-18 victory and the match.
Courtney Reinhold led the way for the Eagles with 17 kills. The sophomore All-American had to hit over and around a big block intended to stop her. Rachel Wenger finished the evening with nine kills.
The Eastern defense stymied Juniata in the third set, as they held their hosts to a.113 hitting percentage, but the top-ranked Eagles were able to solve the Eastern defense in the fourth set and hit .310.
Eastern finishes the year with a 34-5 mark, second only to last year's 35-2 record. They made their fifth trip to the Sweet 16 in the last seven years. Reinhold and Wenger were named to the Juniata Regional All-Tournament team.
