The Eastern University women's soccer team scored four times in the final fifty minutes of the match to break away to a 6-2 senior day win over FDU-Florham. Cara Dembrosky scored what proved to be the game-winner with 2:20 left in the first half.
The Eastern team honored seniors Liza O'Keefe, Jill DiRenzo, Cheryl Palevo, and Lauren Roe. The four players have been part of two NCAA Tournament teams, and have been involved in 57 wins so far in their four year careers. Roe and Palevo both started the match but as each is still dealing with injury had to leave immediately after the initial kick off.
Coach Mouw commented about his seniors saying, "This class has been an integral part of our success over the past four years. I was really grateful that we were able to get Lauren and Cheryl on the field for another time. They have inspired their teammates with their commitment even through injury."
When play started, the Eagles jumped to a 1-0 lead when DiRenzo slammed a Tess Beckwith cross into an empty net just over four minutes into the match. Beckwith did the work on the goal as she made an initial touch to get behind the Devil back line and pushed the ball wide of the onrushing FDU goalkeeper before snapping the ball across the face of the goal and into DiRenzo's path.
The Eagles had chances to double the lead, but Beckwith and Allison Inch each had shots roll just wide. The visitors leveled the match at one on a Kim Campfield goal in the 20th minute. Brittany Kanickij earned the assist on pass from the left side.
Beckwith put the Eagles back up less than two minutes later when she finished a break-away chance on a well- weighted ball over the top from Ashley Graybill. Beckwith's seventh of the year was her second in as many games. Eastern continued to pressure the FDU net, but they were not able to find separation despite several quality chances.
Kanickij scored her 22nd of the year to tie the game at 2-2 with ten minutes to play. The junior forward cracked a 22 yard shot that skipped off the wet turf into the lower left corner. The Devils created the play with good defensive pressure in the attacking third. Michelle da Silva earned the assist on the goal.
The Devils nearly took the lead on a 25 yard free kick from Lora Fink, but Aly Goodman turned away the screamer with a diving stop. Goodman would earn the win with two saves.Â
Dembrosky's first career goal came on overlap after a nice pass from fellow freshman back Katelyn Rittenhouse. Dembrosky earned the box with a good first touch and slotted a low hard shot just inside the far post. Mouw commented, "Cara's goal and Aly's save were really important. We took that momentum into the break and were able to solve some things defensively at the half."
The Eagles held a 10-4 advantage in first half shots.
FDU had been involved in a pair of 5-4 games leading into today's match, and it looked as though this match might go that direction, but the Eastern defense was able to solve things in the second half and held the visitors to a single shot after the break.
Six minutes into the second half, DiRenzo scored her 15th of the year on a corner kick. Kristine Zeiset dug a ball out of a crowd and dropped it to the senior forward who cracked a 12 yard shot home for the 4-2 lead. The tally was the 58th in DiRenzo's career. She now holds the Eastern career mark for goals scored, and stands alone in second on the total points list.
From that point on, the game seemed to be in control for the hosts. Allison Inch made the game safe in the 69th minute. the sophomore midfielder scored her first of the year on another Zeiset pass.
The Eagles picked up their final goal of the day on a penalty kick. Junior captain Amy Achey finished the attempt for her first career goal. The Eagles held a 10-1 edge in second half shots.
Mouw commented on the game saying, "I felt we solved things in the back after their second goal. Their front runners really just keep coming, and I think we got caught unaware a couple times early. I was really pleased to see us put away some chances. We will need that as we enter the post-season."
Eastern returns to action in the Freedom Conference Semifinal on Tuesday. The Eagles will travel to Misericordia to take on the second seeded Cougars at a time to be announced some time on Sunday.
