Over the past two years, Eastern University Volleyball (17-2, 4-0) has not had a lot of practice rebounding from losses. Though the Eagles would prefer not to become accomplished at it, they bounced back nicely from a tough five-set loss at Haverford on Saturday with a dominating three-set win at Manhattanville College.
No Eastern player recorded double-figure kills as Maria Horning used all her options in the offense and the Eagles amassed 14 aces. Courtney Reinhold hit .500 with eight kills on twelve attacks, Mary Poole also finished with eight on 14 attacks, and Rachel Wenger connected for six kills on just nine swings. Wenger and Reinhold only played in two sets each.
The Eagles jumped to commanding leads in each set and never looked back as they surrendered just 27 points. Wenger paced the Eagles with four kills in the opening set. In keeping with their year-long intent to serve aggressively, the Eagles served five first set aces. Bridget Carey had three in the opening set.
Despite committing five attack errors, the Eagles won the second set 25-9. Poole and Carey both had three kills in the second set.
Reinhold returned to action in the third set and immediately announced her presence with authority. The sophomore All-American put down 5 kills and buried three aces in a 25-10 third set win.
Eastern Head Coach Mark Birtwistle felt it was very important to establish tempo early and to pay attention to the details of the match. He was pleased with his team's focus. He said, "We are really so young, and we need to really establish who we are at the beginning of every match. We didn't do that on Saturday, but today we did that very well. We passed well and gave ourselves good attacking opportunities."
Maria Horning finished with 27 assists as the team hit .384. The Eagles will play an alumni game at homecoming before returning to Freedom Conference action next Wednesday. They will host Misericordia in a 7:00 pm game.
