Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball "Digs for the Cure" and Wins

The main story of this evening's Freedom Conference Volleyball game between the 23rd ranked Eastern University Volleyball team and Delaware Valley was not the volleyball. The Eagles, unbeaten in regular season conference play since 1999, used their final regular season contest draw attention to the fight against breast cancer and to honor those who have been affected by the disease. Both teams warmed up in pink, and the Eagles played in pink in front of a crowd of pink clad spectators. The Eagles beat the Aggies in three efficient sets. Heather Kauffman led the hosts with ten kills on just 13 swings.

Both teams paused between the second and third sets as members of both teams took a moment to recognize friends and family members who are battling or who have battled with the disease. Those family members present were brought to the court and given pink roses, and the crowd was led in a brief time of prayer. In addition to the powerful ceremony between sets, the Eastern team made special t-shirts to sell and collected donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The match itself saw the Eagles serve aggressively and run solid offense. Maria Horning finished the match with 30 assists, six digs, and three aces. The sophomore All-American took it upon herself to give her middles quality chances, and Kauffman took full advantage. The first year middle, finished a variety of sets while hitting .769. She also got her hand on five blocks.

Courtney Reinhold played sparingly, but she still managed to put a couple balls inside the ten-foot line. The reigning Freedom Conference Player of the Week finished with six kills in two sets. Rachel Wenger bumped her hitting percentage over .300 for the year with an efficient five kill effort in two sets.

The Eagles hit .342 for the match and finished with 11 aces. Eastern will travel to St. Mary's for a top regional tournament this weekend before returning home to take on Wilkes in the opening round of the Freedom Conference Championship on Wednesday evening.
