The Eastern University volleyball team remained unbeaten at home and lengthened their winning streak to four games with a 3-0 win over Philadelphia Biblical University and a 3-1 win over Widener University on Saturday.
The Eagles began play in their home triangular at 11:00 AM against PBU. The hosts jumped out of the gate quickly, downing the visitors 25-8 in the first set. However, PBU came soaring back and gave Eastern a difficult run in the second set. Eastern would pull away however with a 25-16 victory. The Eagles continued their dominance in the third set and closed out the match with a 25-13 win.
Sophomore outside hitter, Courtney Reinhold had the hot hand for the Eagles in their first match, picking up 14 kills and three key service aces. Rachel Wenger was able to convert on 8 of her 14 attempts for an astounding .571 hitting percentage. Setter Maria Horning was perfect on her attacks, picking up three kills on three attempts. Horning also added 32 assists.
After a game break, the Eagles returned to the court and were greeted by a tough and determined Widener team. The Pride, who picked up a tight 3-0 win over PBU just an hour before came out hitting, countering the Eagles' attack blow for blow early in the first set. Eastern was able to pull out the first set victory 25-16.
Widener wouldn't give in, and evened the score at one set a piece with a 25-22 victory over the hosts. Eastern answered quickly and were able to down the Pride 25-11 in the third set. Despite strong attempts by Widener, the Eagles refused to back down and closed out their second win of the day with a 25-17 win in the fourth set.
Offensively, the Eagles received three double digit kills performances. Reinhold led the Eagles with 14, but was closely followed by Wenger with 13 and Heather Kauffman with 10. Defensively, Libero Kelly Groff led the way with 21 digs. Reinhold added 19, Horning added 16, and Nikki Kummerer added 10.
Eastern plays their final home match and final Freedom Conference match on Wednesday night as they host Delaware Valley College. Match time is set for 7:00 PM. The Eagles then hit the road on Friday and Saturday as they take place in the St. Mary's Invite before returning home for Freedom Conference playoff action.
