The Eastern University field hockey team took another step towards their goal on Saturday with a 5-0 shut out of Misericordia University. With two more conference games remaining, each win is important as the Eagles try to wrap up sole possession of the top seed in the Freedom.
The Eagles took control of the game early when senior forward, Kim Campbell crossed the ball from the end line to fellow senior Olivia Derr for the goal putting the Eagles up 1-0 four minutes into the game. Two minutes later, Derr found the back of the cage again, as she redirected Sarah Garber's initial shot giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Eastern scored for the third time in the opening half, when Campbell put the finishing touch on one of the Eagles' nine penalty corners 12 minutes into the game. Garber inserted the ball into play to Lindsay Moyer, who passed to Campbell for a direct shot into the back right corner of the cage for a 3-0 lead.
The score remained 3-0 in favor of the visiting Eagles until Yvonne Herbster scored the first of her two second half goals. The sophomore from Middleburg, Pa. took a cross from the right side of the field from Derr and finished the play giving the Eagles their fourth goal of the game.
Herbster struck again when she took a cross once again from the right and lofted it into the cage, making the score 5-0. Campbell picked up the assist.
Defensively Laura Ressler and Christin Sutterlein combined for the shut out. Ressler picked up the only save for the Eagles.
The Eagles return to St. Davids, Pa. on Tuesday against Delaware Valley College. This is Eastern's final home regular season game of 2009 as well as their last regular season Freedom Conference match up. The match is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
