In their final non-conference game of the year, the Eastern University men's soccer team found a goal in each half but settled for a 2-2 home draw with Kean. Braden Gross scored in the 82nd minute to send the game to extra time.
The Eagles jumped to an early advantage over the Cougars with a third minute tally from Dan Shields. The first year winger slammed home a rebound of a Terry Fry shot for his first goal of the year. Fry had earned space behind the Cougar back line after Braden Gross made a wide run with the ball and chopped it central to Fry. Kean goalkeeper Brian Haines got hands on the low shot but gave a rebound.
The Eagles nearly doubled the advantage in the 24th minute, but Tyler Brubaker's header from eight yards slipped just over the bar. The Cougars leveled the match on strike from the left side of the penalty box from Abner Denis in the 28th minute, and the game went to half at 1-1. Â
Kean held a 7-5 edge in first half shots, but Eastern had its chances with five corners and several restart chances deep in the attacking end. Jon Crowder made five of his nine saves in the first 45 minutes.
Adam Bajak scored at the hour mark to give the give the guests a 2-1 edge that looked like it might hold up until Gross got on the end of Phil Mantua through ball late. The sophomore striker tapped a quick shot under the charging keeper to level the game.
The Eagles had the better chances, including a couple dangerous looking restarts, in the twenty minutes of overtime, but they were unable to put chances on frame and had to settle for the draw.
The Eastern squad, 6-8-1 on the year, now must turn its attention to Freedom Conference play. The Eagles will play their final away match of the year at Manhattanville on Saturday before closing out the conference slate with a pair of home games next week.
