The Eastern University field hockey team took a quick break from Freedom Conference play on Thursday, traveling a short distance east on Route 30 to face off against Haverford College. A hot offensive start by the Eagles propelled them to victory on a cold and rainy afternoon. Three first half goals were enough for Eastern as they downed the Fords 3-1.
Two minutes into the game, Kim Campbell started the scoring for the Eagles taking a cross from Elya Troup and depositing it into the back of the cage for a quick 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Yvonne Herbster inserted the ball into play off of a penalty corner. Hope Donnelly's initial shot was saved, but she alertly took the deflection and found an open Olivia Derr by the left post of Haverford's goal. Derr found a hole to squeeze in a shot and made it count to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.
Two and a half minutes later, Eastern forced another penalty corner. Herbster again inserted the ball. Kelby Bolton was able to rip a shot from the top of the circle only to have it blocked by the Ford's keeper, Maggie Cronin. Bolton picked up the loose ball and found a wide open Derr by the post. Derr deflected the ball just enough to find the back of the cage, making the score 3-0 with 28 minutes left to play in the first half.
The Fords refused to give in, picking up a goal of their own with seven minutes left to play in the first half. Eastern goal keeper Laura Ressler made the first save off of Haverford's penalty corner, but was unable to come up with another as J. Morgan-Trostle picked up the goal. The score remained 3-1 in favor of the Eagles at the half way mark.
Despite multiple attempts, the offenses of both teams sputtered in the second half. In the end, Eastern would walk away with a 3-1 non-conference victory.
The Eagles return home and return to Freedom Conference action on Saturday. The Eagles face off against King's College at 1:00 PM in St. Davids, Pa.
