Women's Soccer Scores Win Over Del Val

Eastern University Wome's Soccer jumped out to a quick start on the way to a 7-0 win at Delaware Valley. The win is the 100th career victory for Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw.

The rematch of last year's Freedom Conference final lacked the dramatic value of last year's two nail-biters between the two squads. The Eagles jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first nine minutes and led 5-0 at half. Jill DiRenzo, as she has done throughout her career, scored the opening goal of the match. The senior striker timed her run through the Del Val back line and met a beautiful through ball from Bethany Engle just outside the box. DiRenzo poked a low shot around the charging goalkeeper for her team-best 11th goal of the year.

Just seconds later, DiRenzo slipped a ball into space for Tess Beckwith. The speedy sophomore finished her breakaway chance to put the Eagles up by two. Beckwith scored her second of the game in the tenth minute on a tough angle shot that slid in the near post. Mouw, commenting on the goal-scoring spurt to start the match, said, "Tess and Jill have done a great job creating chances this year, but it was important for us to put those away. We came into the match knowing that we were probably the better team, but we have struggled to get separation after the first goal. It was important for us to find that space."

The visitors built the lead to four on a nice play just over midway through the half. Liza O'Keefe floated a high serve from the right flank into the box that Allie Inch volleyed home for her first of the year. Kori Wenger ended the half with a left-footed blast from 15 yards out on a pass from Charlotte Laurie.

Kelsey Doutrich headed home a Katelyn Rittenhouse corner kick to build the Eastern lead to six with fifteen minutes to play. Moments later, Wenger added her second of the year on an Ashley Graybill pass. Graybill's thirty-yard switching ball found Wenger in stride on the right flank. Wenger made a quick cut to put the ball on her left foot and ripped a 25 yard strike into the upper corner.

Mouw said of the game, "I was pleased with our movement in the second half. We have a very young squad, and I think we made some good strides in seeing some things in the second half, and we were able to shorten some minutes for a couple players who have played extensive time over the early part of the year. It was also really good to see Kori and Kelsey out there. They have been struggling with injuries, and it is going to be very important for us to get healthier here down the stretch.

Eastern finished the match with a 28-4 edge in shots. Aly Goodman made one save to record her second shutout.

Mouw, in his eighth year at the helm of the Eastern program, is now 100-50-6. His teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two years. Mouw said of the milestone, "I'm very grateful to have had the chance to build the program at Eastern. I think our players have built a good culture of high expectations and tight community that helps us to be successful. I've had the good fortune of coaching some outstanding players, and they really deserve the credit for the program's success. I am also really grateful for Doug [Hackman] and is contribution to the program over the last three years. He has been invaluable as an assistant."

The Eagles return to action with a critical Freedom Conference contest at Wilkes on Saturday at noon.
