After a a sluggish first half, the Eastern University men's soccer team found two second half goals to win 2-0 at Delaware Valley and improve to 2-1 in Freedom Conference play. Ryan Rohrer scored both goals in the win.
The Eagles entered this afternoon's contest following Saturday's spectacular come-from-behind homecoming win over DeSales, and the first half looked as though the squad might not have found focus on the present. While the Eagles held a 7-6 advantage in shots, they also played the first half with a fairly significant wind. The best chances of the half fell to the hosts.
Jon Crowder kept the sheet clean, but he needed a little help to do it. Dan Shields again saved a ball in the goal. Today was the third straight game the first year forward has saved a ball on the post.
The Eagles made it to half level, but they would have to figure out a way to score into the breeze. During the intermission, the Coach Wagner and his staff challenged the team to raise the intensity level and increase ball pressure. That increased pressure paid dividends in the 60th minute as Rohrer cleaned up a tackle deep in Del Val territory and poked home the game winner. Thirteen minutes later, the first-year midfielder took a pass from Kyle Hurst and doubled the lead wi th his fifth goal of the year.
Crowder made three of his five saves in the second half. The sophomore keeper, however, did not lack for activity as the Aggies served balls from all angles and depths to try to close the gap. The Eastern staff pointed to Crowder's decisiveness in the air as an encouraging note from the game.Â
The Eagles, who are beginning to get players back to full fitness after an injury-riddled start to the year, will have another road test Saturday at Wilkes. That game will follow the women's game and is scheduled to start at 2:30.
