Eastern Field Hockey suffered their second 2-1 loss in their last three matches as the Host Montclair State Redhawks rallied from an early deficit to claim the non-league win.  The Eagles jumped to an early 1-0 lead, but Montclair drew level on a penalty stroke and earned the win with a goal in the fifth minute of the second overtime.
Elya Troup picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and connected on her first goal of the season in the ninth minute.It seemed that score was going to hold up. Laura Ressler made four saves before the half. With just less than five minutes to play, however, the Redhawks were able to get a ball in the circle behind Eastern's standout keeper. When the shot hit an Eastern defender's body, Montclair converted the subsequent penalty stroke to knot the score.
The game remained level through regulation. Statistically, Montclair State had the better of the game through regulation with a 21-10 advantage in shots and a 12-9 advantage in corners, but the Eagles held on as Ressler made eight more stops in the second frame.
The first overtime belonged to the Eagles. After being under pressure throughout regulation, Eastern turned the tables and pressured their hosts. They were able to pin the Redhawks deep in their zone and earned three penalty corners and enjoyed a 4-0 advantage in shots in the first overtime frame.
The hosts endured the Eastern onslaught. After the break between periods, the Redhawks picked up a turnover in the midfield and used outstanding transition play to create the game-winner Rebecca Dobiesz converted her third strike of the year to keep her team unbeaten.Â
"We had our chances to win it in the first overtime," Coach Azzarano said, " and we know what it will take for us to become a top-tier team, and it is frustrating to fall short, and yet we see how close we are coming."
The Eagles return to action next Tuesday evening at William Paterson University.
