April 8: Softball Rallies to Sweep Wesley

Raychel Weis pitched a five inning shutout in the opener and delivered a two-out two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth in the nightcap to help the Eastern University softball team sweep the visiting Wesley Wolverines in non-conference action Tuesday.

Weis had an early cushion in the first game when Karen Hertzog knocked in a pair of runs with a two-out single to center field. She allowed lead-off batters to reach in the first two innings, but calmly pitched out of jams in both. The Eastern bats broke the game open in the bottom of the second with a five-run rally. Hertzog picked up another RBI in the inning and Val Heffline closed out the rally with an RBI single.

Weis worked her way through the final three innings without trouble, and the Eagles put another three runs on the board to bring the game to an end early.

Game two proved to be a much tougher proposition for the Eagles. After giving up a first inning run, the Eagles scratched out an unearned run on a walk, a stolen base, a wild pitch, and a passed ball to tie the game in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams put runners on base through the next six innings, but neither team could generate a go-ahead run. Eastern starter Ashley Lewis was the beneficiary of a nifty 6-4-3 double play in the third to help her out of a jam.

With the international tie-breaker putting a runner on second to start the inning, the Wolverines sacrificed the runner to third to get two chances to advance her for the go-ahead run. Lewis made a great pitch to get a ground out to a drawn-in infield for the second out, but Jessica Morgan's soft line drive just eluded Weis at second base, and Wesley led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Eastern designated player Val Heffline beat out her sacrifice bunt for an infield hit, and she promptly stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Morgan made a pair of good pitches to get the next two Eastern hitters to pop out. The game then rested on Weis's shoulders. After taking some pitches, the junior from Coatsville ripped a solid line drive to right-center for the game-winning hit.

Coach Ambler said of the day, "they were a pair of different wins, but it is good to get a pair. We played good defense and a had a pair of solid pitching performances, and the big hit to end the day is a huge momentum builder for us."

The Eagles return to conference action with an important home doubleheader against Neumann College. That game is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
