Late Rallies Mean Split for Baseball

The Eastern University baseball team knew going into the afternoon's doubleheader against Marywood that they would need to sweep the visiting Pacers to have a chance at the PAC playoffs. The Eagles put together a 10-run rally in their last at bat to win game one 11-5. Eastern then seized an early lead in game two, and were within one out of sweeping the series and finishing at .500 in the Conference, but Marywood turned the tables with a five run seventh to take the nightcap.

Kenny Long went the distance in game one. The senior gave up four runs in the fourth inning and looked to be in line for a loss when the Pacers made it 5-0 with another run in the fifth. The Eagles picked up a run on an Andrew Reynolds ground-out in the fifth, but still trailed 5-1 with just six outs to play.

Mike Santello started the sixth when he was hit by a pitch. Davis Murray singled and Sean Ciletti walked to load the bases for John Montague. The senior catcher kept the inning going with a two-run double. When Brian Miller flied out to deep right, the tying run moved to third and Ciletti scored.

The Eagles continued to rap out base hits to turn the batting order over and drive in runs. Ciletti capped the rally with a 400 foot shot to left center to plate Murray and Santello. The game one win kept the Eagles' faint playoff hopes alive, but action in Hackettstown and Dallas had the wrong teams winning.

Nonetheless, the Eastern team jumped to a 5-0 lead for Paul Sinclair. Long moved to first base for game two and finished 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Long reached base a third time, appropriately enough for those who have followed his career, when he was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. Long leads the Eagles in on base percentage for the year.  Kurt Kebaugh also drove in a pair for the Eagles.

Misericordia won two of three off of Gwynedd-Mercy and Centenary finished their series sweep of Centenary to officially eliminate the Eagles from the post-season.

Eastern, who will conclude their season Monday with a home game against Wesley, set a new program mark for conference wins with a series win over the Pacers.
