April 19: Softball Secures Spot with Sweep

The Eastern University softball team needed to win one of two games at Cedar Crest to secure a spot in the PAC Playoffs. The Eagles took care of that with a 6-2 win in game one. They completed the sweep with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.

Raychel Weis earned her second win in two days in game one. Weis and the Eagles fell behind 2-0 in the third. The damage could have been worse, but the junior right-hander induced a pair of pop-ups to get out of a two-on one out jam.

The Eagles battled back to tie the game with a five-hit two-run rally in the top of the fourth. Ashley Lewis and Michelle Morongell drove in runs with singles. The Eagles took a lead on an unearned run in the fifth, and then broke open the game with a two-run sixth. Stephanie Weaver jump-started the rally with a double. Weaver, who went 4-4 in the opener, scored on an overthrow. Alissa Brubaker singled and stole second. Megan Favazza then rapped a single to the outfield to score Brubaker.

Weis meanwhile settled into a really good rhythm on the mound and faced just thirteen Falcons in the final four innings to secure the win.

Ashley Lewis picked up the win in game two as the Eagles gave her plenty of offensive support as they pounded out 14 hits and seven runs in the nightcap. Amy Bellows slugged her second home run of the year for the big blow of the game.

Karen Hertzog put the Eagles on top early with an RBI double in the first. The Eagles picked up three more runs in the second. Carly Rawlings knocked in a run with a double. Weaver and Brubaker also picked up RBI in the inning.

The Falcons picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Doubles from Hertzog and Molly Oberholzer earned one of those runs right back in the top of the third. Belllows led off the sixth with a home run. Rawlings drove in her second run of the game with a two-out double in the seventh.

Lewis struck out six batters in the complete game win. The Eagles return to action Tuesday at Haverford College. With their 12th conference win of the year, the Eagles assure themselves a spot in the playoffs and give themselves a chance to work toward hosting a first round game with just two league games to play.
